The Importance of Footwear for Healthy Feet

Why footwear matters

Ill-fitting or poorly designed shoes can cause a range of issues, from blisters and calluses to more complex conditions such as bunions, hammertoes, or plantar fasciitis. Over time, the wrong footwear can even affect your posture, knees, hips, and back.

Wearing supportive, well-fitted shoes helps to:

  • Reduce pressure and friction on the skin

  • Support the arches and joints of the feet

  • Prevent or slow down the development of foot deformities

  • Improve balance and stability

  • Make everyday walking more comfortable

What to look for in a good shoe

When buying footwear, keep these points in mind:

👣 Toe room: There should be enough space for your toes to wiggle, and at least a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
👣 Width and depth: Shoes should fit the natural width of your foot and not squeeze or rub.
👣 Heel support: A firm heel counter helps stabilise your foot and ankle.
👣 Cushioning and flexibility: A cushioned sole absorbs shock, while moderate flexibility allows your foot to move naturally.
👣 Comfort from the start: Shoes should feel comfortable right away — if they pinch in the shop, they’ll only cause problems later.

Common footwear mistakes

  • Wearing shoes that are too small or narrow

  • Choosing fashion over function (e.g. high heels or unsupportive pumps)

  • Keeping worn-out shoes long past their supportive life

  • Not replacing trainers after heavy use (most need replacing every 300–500 miles of walking or running)

When to seek help

If you regularly develop blisters, corns, or pain when walking, it may be a sign your footwear isn’t right for you. A podiatrist can assess your feet, identify pressure points, and advise on the most suitable shoe styles for your foot type.
