Understanding Plantar Fasciopathy – Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

What Is Plantar Fasciopathy?

Plantar fasciopathy is a degenerative condition affecting the plantar fascia — the strong band of connective tissue that runs along the sole of the foot, supporting your arch and absorbing shock as you walk.

Contrary to the older idea that it's primarily an inflammatory issue ("-itis"), we now understand it more as a wear-and-tear condition — hence the updated term plantar fasciopathy.

Common Symptoms:

  • Sharp, stabbing heel pain — often worst with the first steps in the morning or after rest

  • Discomfort when standing for long periods or after exercise

  • Tenderness at the base of the heel

  • Pain that eases slightly with movement, but may return after activity

Who’s at Risk?

  • Those who stand or walk for long periods

  • People with flat feet or very high arches

  • Runners and athletes

  • Those with tight calf muscles or Achilles tendons

  • Individuals with increased BMI or rapid weight gain

Treatment Options We Offer at Bailey Podiatry: We take a multi-faceted approach to managing plantar fasciopathy:

Gait and biomechanical assessment – to identify contributing factors such as foot posture, footwear, or walking style
Footwear advice – helping you select cushioned, supportive shoes
Orthotics or insoles – custom or prefabricated devices to offload pressure and support the arch
Stretching and strengthening plans – guided exercises for the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, and calf muscles

What You Can Do at Home:

  • Rest and reduce high-impact activities

  • Ice your heel for 10–15 minutes after activity

  • Perform daily stretches for the calf and plantar fascia

  • Avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces

  • Use a tennis ball or frozen bottle to gently roll under the foot

When to Seek Help

If heel pain is affecting your daily activities or not improving with home care, it’s time to book an assessment. Early intervention can prevent long-term discomfort and help get you back on your feet — literally.
